Minecraft re-created in Unity 3D engine for week-long challenge

What if Minecraft didn't develop it's own rendering engine? What if it used a previously-existing game engine, like Valve's Source engine or the Unity 3D engine? YouTube user Shane Beck tried to re-create Minecraft in the Unity 3D engine during a week-long programming challenge, and it looks very impressive.

While it's nowhere near a complete game, the result still looks as good (or even better in some cases) than Minecraft with shader mods. Beck was able to recreate infinite terrain, ore veins, editable blocks, basic physics, health and stamina, and the ability to use Minecraft skins. You can check out the result at the video above (or link below), or skip to 10:20 to see the final result.
