Id say if you're using an x86 Chromebook, and know a little more abou Linux, reformatting the partitions and installing a compatible Linux would be better than crouton. Simply because you don't run both os's as the same time.

Essentially, your not running two OS's at the same time because chrome OS is based on a version of Linux and you are just running a different environment of the OS at the same time. Plus I have done this both ways on my old Acer Chromebook and there was little to no performance loss. And if you don't want them both running you should just install Linux as a Partition with Chrubuntu and chose which one to boot into went you start it up, I did this with my friend's Acer C720 Chromebook.

I did it both ways on my Dell Chromebook 11 at one point. Normal Ubuntu linux had a lot of issues because it was missing drivers for my touchpad and hibernation/sleep. Crouton, especially when using the XFCE desktop environment, is very lightweight.

I'm using a Chromebook to type this, and I find the downside of them is their inability to run Java & Flash Player. I don't want to bust it, but I might for this....

It's actually a sideways dash. On my keyboard, it's on the same key as the backwards slash.
